Tell Congressman Blum: Stop Sabotaging Our Health CareOn May 4th Iowans watched as Congressman Rod Blum voted to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. To add insult to injury, Congressman Blum stood behind President Trump in a Rose Garden ceremony and smiled and celebrated while 200,000 Iowans feared losing their health care. And since then, Blum and the Trump administration have been actively working to sabotage the ACA, harming Iowans who are covered by the program. Blum stated, “The AHCA will stabilize the market, lower premiums for Iowans, increase choices, reduce taxes, and protect people who have pre-existing conditions,” Blum said in a statement. “After years of higher costs, fewer choices and broken promises under Obamacare, it's time to enact a better system that actually works for Americans.” This simply isn’t true. Blum’s views are a step backward for Iowans. The ill and the elderly would see their premium prices soar. According to the AARP, elderly Iowans could be charged as much as five times more for their insurance. Those with pre-existing conditions would see a sharp rise in premiums and out of pocket expenses. We would actually see the number of uninsured Iowans rise. Blum voted on a tax break for the wealthiest of Americans while making health insurance unaffordable for those with low or modest incomes. The US Census reports that the uninsured rate of Iowans in 2013 was 8.1% compared to 4.3% in 2016. And recently the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) found that premiums will increase by 15% due to the reduction in spending on advertising and outreach to promote enrollment in health coverage. This intentional sabotaging of Iowans’ health care is unacceptable.
